PRINTED MATTER 2015-2016

Printed Matter is the name of a NY bookshop entirely dedicated to artists’ books, their dissemination and, sometimes, production. During this Media Studies course at the Architectural Association students have been shown some of the best artists’ books in London-based collections at the V&A National Art Library and Chelsea College Library. They heard from former MOMA curator Clive Phillpot, who defined Artists’ Books through a series of essays, as books produced by artists, or artists using the book as medium.

The aim of the course was to carefully consider paperspace and experiment with both its format and materiality in the context of a personal project. Students visited a printing press, Push in Bermondsey where they learnt about Lithographic techniques. They also engaged in a bookbinding workshop with Douglas Bevans and were shown AA works by Manijeh Verghese and Wayne Daly, designer and founder of Bedford Press at the AA, before engaging in their own Printed Matter production.
